Hidden in rue St Laurent down by the river, almost under the cable car to the Bastille, is a small English bookshop The Bookworm cafe.
You can find second hand adult and children books, as well as English newspapers. The cafe also organises events which can be found on their website.
So why not pay them a visit, have a coffee or tea and browse what they have to offer.

Isn't it everyone's dream to impress guests with your cooking? Here's the solution to this: COOK&GO, a great place in Grenoble where you can prepare a 3-course meal, learn a few cooking tips and go home with your dinner for 2 people.
A few of us got together one Friday evening to brush up our cooking skills. First, we were welcomed by the 2 chefs and started by eating delicious cupcakes and drinking white wine. We then got onto the preparation of our salmon-wrapped in prosciutto main course, then made the mushroom soup and finished by preparing the mix for our spicy pumpkin cake. The concept, quite original, is that you prepare all your food there following the recipe in front of you and the guidance of the chef, then take it home to cook according to the instructions on the container. Our evening ended with a tasting of the home-made foie gras (and more white wine!).
It was great fun to meet colleagues in a different environment (some being more at ease with a mobile phone than with the cooking scales!) and definitely an experience I would recommend to learn a few recipes and techniques. You can also buy a few products or utensils in the shop.

C'est La Folie

I'm not a great fan of books written by expats living in France. Too often they seem to be collections of anecdotes about how funny and frustrating the French are. I once counted about fifteen of these books on the bookstand of a cross channel ferry. So it was with a little scepticism that I opened Michael Wright's book about his attempt to find adventure in France. My father had recommend and sent it to me so I felt slightly obliged to give it ago. At first I sneered at his references to his plane, another rich expat I thought. But I persevered and have to admit I am actually enjoying it. The book is actually quite amusing and not as disparaging of the French as these books usually are. I haven't finished yet but so far so good.

Crying with laughter last night as I read about him transporting sexed up sheep in his espace.

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness

It's fall, the days are shorter, the trees are red, yellow and orange, and I've already had to start scratching the ice from my cars windscreen. The end of october sees the first schoolholidays of the new school year. A chance for the kids to rest after their first hectic term. And don't forget the clocks go back an hour the night of the 29/30th October. It's also the moment to get your cars checked and think about snow tyres before winter really hits.

Spend a night in a refuge

Have you thought of spending a night in a mountain refuge? It's great to escape the pollution, noise and lights of the city. As night falls you experience the mountains in a whole new way. We are lucky in Grenoble as the mountains are very close, so one doesn't have to be a keen hiker to reach some of the refuges.
There are two types of refuge the guarded and unguarded. The first usually has to be booked. There is a person who looks after the refuge, so it tends to be cleaner and well kept. They will often cook a meal for the guests. Sleeping accomodation is in dormitories. Of course this type of refuge is not free. A good example is the Cret de Poulet Refuge above St Pierre d'Allevard. A fairly easy hour and a half walk from the cross country skiing centre at Barioz leads to the refuge. In the summer, it is run by a young couple who are welcoming and provide copious meals. In winter volunteers take over. It is only open at weekends and is often booked well in advance.
The second possibility is the unguarded refuge which is free. Things are decidely more basic. The upkeep depends on volunteers from the local community. People who stay are expected to tidy up after themselves. There is usually tables, chairs, a fireplace, and matresses on a dormitory floor. The door is always open and the refuge operates on a 'first come first served basis'. Those who arrive too late may find themselves turned away as the refuge is already full. A good example is Grande montagne refuge above La Rochette. This refuge can be reached after a slightly steep one hour thirty minute walk. The refuge is quite well equipped with pots and pans. It is, however, popular and can fill up quickly. One advantage is that there at least four other refuges within 1.5km of each other, so if one is full you can always try another.
One last point don't forget a sleeping bag and some toilet paper.

An Irish pub in Grenoble

One of the first places you'll probably hear about as an expatriat is O'Callaghan's pub. It's an Irish theme pub like those we find all over the world. It's by the river, close to the pedestrian bridge which leads to the Bastille. O'Callaghan's pub has been a meeting place for Grenoble expatriats for many years. You'll find beers served in pint glasses and hear English spoken in accents from all over the world. The terrace is a great place to sit on a summer's evening, alternatively you can watch the football or rugby inside, or even have a game of darts.
Recently an O'Callaghan's restaurant opened very close to the pub. They offer curry nights on Fridays and Sunday lunches. The food is good but one strange feature is that potates only come as baked jacket potatoes. A little strange with Sunday lunch and disappointing when you order fish and chips.
So when your feeling a bit homesick or want to hear some English, head down to O'Callaghan's pub.

Forum des associations

As I mentionned in my last post, it's 'La rentrée' and one feature of this period is the 'Forum des associations'. Each village or commune organises a sort of salon where the different associations or clubs present their activity to potential participants. There are clubs for every activity; football, tennis, climbing, painting, music, yoga, in fact almost any activity you can think of is represented. There is so much choice that some people have to set themselves a limit, one sport and one artisitic club for example, if not the cost and time would be crippling. Many clubs take place on Wednesdays as there is no school. A lot of mothers don't work on Wednesday and spend the day ferrying their offspring to and from different clubs. Others take place in the evenings or on Saturday mornings. Most French people join at least one association and their kids often two or three.

In France the 'vie associative' is taken very seriously, so seriously in fact that in 1901 a law was passed governing the organisation of these clubs, you may well hear people talking about 'la loi mille neuf cent un'. This law sets strict rules about the committee who runs the club and any paid employees. In addition the role of the 'bénévole' (volunteer) in the association is very important, again most French people do some form of volunteering with associations. They act as treasurer, secretary or just offer their time to help the association. Associations are a part of life like school and work and help fill the time between the famous holidays.

La rentrée

It's 'rentrée' time again. After the long summer break, schoolchildren are getting ready to go back to school. However the 'rentrée' is not just for the kids, it's an integral part of French culture. After the 14th of July, the National holiday, it seems that the whole country shuts down until September. Forget trying to contact any part of the French administration, there is of course a skeleton staff, but you can guarantee the person you need is on holiday. Restaurants and shops all over Grenoble post signs informing you that they are closed for the annual holidays. Some companies even close down for the month of August. The motorways are clogged with parting and returning holidaymakers, and the most important news items are the traffic and weather reports. Then just as suddenly it's all over and the first week of September finds everyone back at work and the country grinds back to work.
Les vacannces (holidays) and la rentrée are the two most important moments in the French calendar.

Are your cars equipped?

When you look outside, don't you think it's the perfect christmas picture?
Snow everywhere, snowmen growing in the gardens, kids getting excited (so are we) about Christmas...Lovely but no so much when you need to take your car to go to work or to that long-planned week-end in Alsace to visit the Christmas markets!!!
When the temperature drops below 7°C (44 Farenheit), the car and tyre manufacturers advise installing snow tyres on your car to avoid skidding. Even if the roads are clear, this can save a lot of trouble, even more so when there are a few inches on the tarmac.
Once the snow gets too thick, keep clear of the roads and enjoy your cosy home! The snowplough will eventually come by and clear it all.

Spring's here!

Good bye long winter, cold weather! Store away at once your skis, boots, gloves and hats!
Welcome flowers, buds and little birds! Take your skirts, sandals and sun cream out of the cupboard! Spring has finally reached us!!! Although according to the saying: 'Avril ne te découvre pas d'un fil' we should be careful as it might get cold again. 'Mai, fais ce qu'il te plait' and please yourself!
Remember you need to use up all your paid holidays before 31st May or they might be gone forever (check with your HR).
May is traditionally a month that implies a lot of bank holidays but this year, 1st and 8th fall on a Saturday.
You can still get a long week end (Pont) with the Ascension (13th May).

So, put another sausage on the BBQ, help yourself to a glass of rosé and ...enjoy!

Shrove Tuesday and Carnival

Time for fancy dress! Carnival will be here soon (16th Feb.) and you might encounter ghosts, fairies, pirates or princesses roaming in the streets of Grenoble.
Traditionally, on Shrove Tuesday you eat pancakes (Crêpes) to celebrate the beginning of Lent, 40 days before Easter.
So, get your fancy best outfit out of the cupboard and have fun!!

Everyone at ETC Logos would like to wish you a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Remember you've got until the 31st of January to do the same with your colleagues and acquaintances, after this, it's bad luck. Why not treat them to a 'Galette des roi'? This is a French tradition to celebrate the Epiphany, the arrival of the three kings in Bethleem at Jesus' birth. The gateau is in reality a puff pastry tart with marzipan filling. The tart contains a 'feve' which intitles its lucky finder to be treated as king. Originally the 'feve' was, as the translation suggests, a bean which, when planted, brought a good harvest. Today, the 'feves' are more modern figurines of popular characters such as Asterix, and come in series which kids love to collect.

Christmas is coming!!

Christmas is coming soon and aren't we all running to get the best Christmas present?
This is one of the times of the year where shops are allowed to be open on Sunday, for ultimate shopping!
You can run along the pedestrian streets, shop with the whole of Grenoble in Grand-Place or alternatively, go to the fair -trade Christmas market on Square Docteur Martin, which offers a variety of unusual gifts.
For food and drinks, your best bet is the Victor Hugo Christmas market with its 'pain d'epices', mulled wine and oysters!
Finally, remember to keep a bag of 'papillotes' at home, for a sweet snack!

Fortunately, our cross -cultural seminars are a way to help you understand your own culture as well as the culture of the country you've just relocated to.
Whether you've just arrived in France or you're about to leave as an expatriate, take 1 day to think this through.
Our last seminar, for 2 Chinese assignees, was very rich and successful! Both participants really enjoyed it!
